We investigate whether action video games can generalise its benefits to perceptual and cognitive tasks through an enhancement in learning rate. In direct replication of a preliminary investigation (Zhang et al., in preparation), we conducted a pre-registered study to investigate the process of “learning to learn”. This is a type of generalisation characterised by an increase in learning rate, distinct to generalisation leading to immediate benefits in a new task. We hypothesise that action video game training can modulate learning to learn through an attention-driven mechanism. Through hierarchical Bayesian modelling, we found action video game training to enhance learning rate in an unseen cognitive task, despite it having no effect on the learning rate of a perceptual task...
