Memory self-efficacy tends to decrease with advancing age, which constitutes a potential reason for observed age-related differences in memory performance. Divergent from the theorized solid bidirectional relationship, a weak connection between memory self-efficacy and memory performance is often observed. lbis weak relationship might be the result of conscious deliberations, such as stereotypes, social desirability, or self-esteem costs, introducing biases in the measurement of memory selfefficacy. We theorized that an indirect measurement would reduce this bias. An indirect measurement based on response times was created and tested against a direct measurement. Contrary to the hypothesis, the indirect measurement of memory self-efficacy did not irnprove the prediction ofmemory performance. We suspect that the applied indirect measurement does not possess the intended properties. Suggestions for its improvement are discussed.
