Climate change victims and villains : Analyzing discourses on climate change in French and English online news articles

Diplôme Master Climate change victims and villains : Analyzing discourses on climate change in French and English online news articles eng 2021 author Amstutz Maïté 815958 director Riggs Ashley Merrill 505495 90 This paper analyzes the language and rhetorical devices used to portray natural disasters and migrations caused by climate change in French and English articles from two European online newspapers: Euronews and France 24. The analysis was carried out using comparable corpora to document occurrences of different rhetorical devices and words, such as personification, alliteration, metaphor, and victimizing language. The results showed a tendency to use villainizing language when describing climate events and victimizing language when portraying climate migrants in both languages. I argue that the villainizing and victimizing language used to portrays climate events as monsters/killers and climate migrants as their victims discourages readers from taking responsibility for their contribution to climate change and from fighting against it.
