It is known that peripheral cues facilitate performance, presumably because they capture attention. Contingent attentional capture refers to attentional facilitation by exogenous cues that is limited to conditions where cue and target properties match. For instance, red cues facilitate performance with a red target, whereas white cues do not facilitate processing of a red target. Previous studies on contingent capture focused on reaction times with stimuli that were clearly above perceptual threshold.
