Diplôme Master Climatic signals in the Paleocene fluvial formation of the Tremp-Graus Basin, Pyrenees, Spain eng 2018 author Hunger Teodoro 773044 director Castelltort Sébastien 0000-0002-6405-4038 761351 The Paleocene fluvial successions of the Tremp-Graus basin in the South Central Pyrenean Basin preserve a nearly continuous record of climate evolution through the Upper Cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene epochs, hosting two remarkable thermal events; the pre-onset excursion (POE) and the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), during which a dramatic global warming event took place. These series thus represent an important record of paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic information that can be studied to help improve the understanding of the current global warming. In this study, we focus on two correlated sections, Esplugafreda and Serraduy, composed of paleosoils with carbonate nodules, fluvial channels and fine grained floodplain material. Stable isotopic analysis on the nodules, XRF, XRD on the whole rock and on clay mineralogy were carried out in order to assess the effects the climatic changes had on sediment composition. The Paleocene record shows no significant change in temperature or in sediment composition processes, except during the two abrupt global warming events, the POE and PETM, that greatly enhanced the hydrological cycle through a rise in paleotemperatures at the Paleocene-Eocene boundary.
