It is highly conserved in vertebrates and the coding sequence is preceded by an upstream open reading frame that could regulate its expression. In mice, GHOST protein is observed in small punctate structures in the soma of neurons of the claustrum and the reticular nucleus of the thalamus. Our data suggests that GHOST is a glycosylated type 1 transmembrane protein.
