Numerous studies of the developmental trajectory of response inhibition have been carried out. However, to our knowledge, no studies have specifically compared response inhibition abilities in preterm children to those of children born full-term. Response inhibition has been described as the hallmark of executive control (Verbruggen and Logan, 2008) and reflects the ability to inhibit an action which is no longer appropriate to the on-going task. Deficits in this ability have been reported in children born preterm and have been associated with diagnoses of ADHD. Furthermore response inhibition impairment has been linked to difficulties in emotional regulation.
