Dysphoric and non-dysphoric participants could receive small and high monetary rewards for good performance in a mental calculation task. Rewards were shown either supraliminally or subliminally before each trial. Due to the lack of pertinent empirical evidence and cognitive models of reward processing, we formulated two competing hypotheses to predict performance following subliminal reward cues in dysphoria : According to model A, subliminal rewards were not expected to boost performance, while model B predicted an increase in performance. Data were analyzed in accordance with the likelihood ratio approach and yielded mixed results that were further challenged by descriptive data...
