In order to solve this challenge, I attempt to rescue, rather than debunk, the notion of liberalization along with the ambition to link it to the purported diversity of its sub-phenomena (deregulation, privatization, welfare retrenchment, etc.), but with tenable underlying assumptions (liberalization as a transformation rather than a removal of something), with higher conceptual precision (a transformation of an institution's mode of coordination towards the pole liberality), and with improved empirical applicability (an empirically-derived framework of logics of liberalization). Empirically, embedded in comparisons of Japan with the cases of France and Germany, I show that not only there was little to “liberalize” in Japan in certain dimensions outside capital relations, but that in addition in other dimensions like labour commodification a certain stratified relational normativity has crucially limited and shaped neoliberal structural reforms. Cette thèse consiste en une étude théorique du « problème de libéralisation » dans le domaine socio-économique, ainsi que d'une étude empirique de la trajectoire de changement institutionnel du Japon, un cas important de capitalisme coordonné. Nous proposons un cadre théorique de logiques de libéralisation pour rendre compte du problème de libéralisation. L'étude empirique ensuite consiste en un volet comparatif et une étude de cas. Dans le volet comparatif, nous comparons d'abord les politiques publiques de 22 pays de l'OCDE, et ensuite les trois cas de la France, de l'Allemagne et du Japon de façon plus approfondie. L'étude de cas consiste en une analyse institutionnelle des spécificités du système socio-économique du Japon à la lumière du cadre théorique de logiques de libéralisation. Il est notamment argumenté que la compréhension de la trajectoire du Japon requiert la prise en compte d'un type particulier de normativité relationnelle stratifiée dont son système institutionnel est imprégné.
