Socio-emotional Selectivity theory and Dynamic Integration theory are introduced as explanations of these age-related differences. Attachment theory is presented as another explanation for these differences. Empirical evidence has shown how interindividual differences in attachment moderate affective processing in young adults. However, little research has examined the role of attachment strategies on cognitive-emotional processes in older adults. Consequently, the experimental section investigates the role of attachment strategies on automated self-structures in young and older adults using an Emotional Stroop task and a self-report attachment measure. A Mixed-effects Model was applied to the experimental data in which findings suggest a decoupling of the use of attachment strategies and the automatic processing of self-attributes with age. These findings are discussed in terms of differences of Attachment Avoidance and Attachment Anxiety.
