Welfare states are dedicated to fighting poverty. This fight indirectly improves public health by reducing material hardship and social exclusion. Health care systems provide access to health care. My thesis disentangles for the first time the effects of two major social determinants of health, public policy and health care, on the self-rated health status of the poor.
