The United Nations (UN) has been present in the field since its inception, often with the assistance of interpreters. Since work in the field is very different from interpreting in UN conference settings, UNOG has organized a series of training activities aimed at addressing specific challenges encountered in the field. This contribution is part of ongoing mixed-methods research based on semi-structured interviews, focus groups and surveys involving the participants of different training activities and UNOG’s management and which aims to validate the effectiveness of said training initiatives. Drawing on the findings of this research, as well as on our experience as interpreters in the field and as interpreter trainers, we will discuss the following aspects in this chapter: the particularities of UN field missions; the functioning and the contents of the different training activities; and the need to design training activities that take the particularities of UN field missions into account. Our findings show that these programmes helped the participants to feel better equipped to face the challenges of interpreting in the field.
