In well defined situations, protein maps, obtained from tissue biopsies or biological fluids by this technique, can be automatically analyzed by computer. Some polypeptide patterns are the fingerprints of diseases. Applying clustering algorithm and learning techniques, the prototype expert system MELANIE recognized patterns and associated the correct diagnosis to the specific pattern.
