Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to define British irony's main features and to apply the knowledge acquired to the translation of an ironic text. It starts with an analysis of irony from a multidisciplinary point of view (with authors like Grice, Attardo, Mizzau, Bara, Olbrechts-Tyteca, Perelman, Mateo), to then focus on the very British aspects of it through the ideas of the British anthropologist Kate Fox and two newspapers (The Independent and The Telegraph) plus the renowned magazine The Economist . An historical recount of Henry VIII Tudor's life and reign follows, to conclude with the translation of an extract of John O'Farrell's book : « An utterly impartial history of Britain – or 2000 years of upper class idiots in charge ».
