This pilot study examines how professionals use tablets for consecutive interpreting and whether technology is sufficiently advanced for this process to be effective. Six in-depth interviews were conducted with professional interpreters who use tablets. Subsequently, a series of inductive codes were developed, and the interviews were analyzed using CAQDAS software. Qualitative and quantitative results show that professional interpreters use tablets for consecutive interpreting on a regular basis and in a wide variety of settings. Practitioners generally feel that the tools they use meet their needs. Tablet interpreting is well received in most settings, though some concerns exist. Nevertheless, most respondents believed tablet interpreting far outstrips the functionalities offered by pen and paper. Conclusions include a draft framework of features to consider when assessing new and existing tablets, applications and styluses to determine their potential effectiveness. They also underscore the need for training in this budding field.
