Abstract

Attention is drawn to the presence of Melanostoma mellarium (Meigen, 1822) in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A key to help in identification of the species is provided and what is known of its biology is summarised. Problems relating to the status of other central European Melanostoma taxa are alluded to, as is the need for genetics work aimed at their resolution.
