Spontaneous birefringence in boracites. Measurements and applications

Published inFerroelectrics, vol. 20, no. 1-2, no. 1-2 (Proc. Fourth Int. Meet. Ferroelectr., Leningrad, USSR. Part 1), p. 21-36
Publication date1978

The temperature dependence was studied of the spontaneous birefringence of the fully ferroelectric or ferroelastic phases of 21 boracite crystals with the formula M3B7O13X (M = Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, or Cd; X = Cl, Br, or I). First-order phase transitions were observed with 3 types of sequences. The crystallophysical and potential technology applications of spontaneous birefringence are discussed.

  • Birefringence boracite ferroelectricity ferroelasticity
  • Phase transition boracite birefringence
  • Chromium chloride boracite birefringence
  • Manganese halide boracite birefringence
  • Iron halide boracite birefringence
  • Cobalt halide boracite birefringence
  • Nickel halide boracite birefringence
  • Zinc halide boracite birefringence
  • Copper halide boracite birefringence
  • Cadmium halide boracite birefringence
  • Bromide boracite transition metal birefringence
  • Iodide boracite transition metal birefringence
