Photoferroelectric phenomena in ferroelectric-ferroelastic Cd2Nb2O7

Abstract Elec. permittivity e(T), pyroelec. current T(T) and photoresponse of Cd2Nb2O7 single crystals under illumination were studied at 100-300 K. Light-induced change in e(T), T(T), Px(T), Ts, and Tc related to optical recharge of traps and to an anomalous photovoltaic effect was obsd. At room temp., photosensitivity of Cd2Nb2Oy is obsd. in the spectral region of extrinsic (between l = 400 / 500 nm) and intrinsic (l .ltorsim. 380 nm) absorption. At T < Tc, the spectra shift as a whole towards a short light wavelength side. A photoinduced Curie point shift of DTc .simeq. -2 / 3 K occurs on transition from para- to ferroelec. phase. An internal macroscopic elec. field generated along Ps during the Maxwell relaxation time due to the photovoltaic effect is E .simeq. 1 * 103 V/cm (for light intensity of .apprx.2 * 10-2 W/cm2 and l = 632.8 nm). Photorefractive effect in Cd2Nb2O7 in such an elec. field is of (Dn)cal .apprx. 10-5 / 10-6.
