Résumé

Glycobiology deals with carbohydrates or sugars and understanding their biology. The sugar structures are problematic; being linear and also branched, the inter-monomeric links are not constant. Thus highly modernized tools like MS, LC-MS, NMR etc. are required to define a given glycan structure. These sugars play many significant biological roles in an organism and in the present study the information on the role of these glycans, more importantly glycoproteins (glycans bound to proteins) or glycolipids (glycans bound to lipids) and other glycan forms involved in the host-pathogen interactions are considered, extracted and reported in the Sugarbind database. Pathogens are believed to bind the sugar moieties on the host cell membrane with their proteins called lectins or adhesins and vice versa by the host for their interactions. The Sugarbind database reports the information regarding the different pathogens and lectins, adhesins or fimbrial proteins that bind the host sugar moieties along with citation information. The information in the database is extracted and annotated from more than one hundred and seventy (170) citations or research publications so far and with more than a thousand entries being reported in the database. In the present study a test curation is performed in order to review data consistency and extract new information from the articles that can be included in the database. This work is extended while focusing on Helicobacter species. This effort resulted in strengthening control checks in the curation process and proposing new fields that complement existing ones.
