Abstract

Episodic memory is defined by the capacity to create and to recall memories of everyday events. The proper functioning of episodic memory relies on key healthy brain structures such as the temporal lobe and the prefrontal cortex. More specifically, binding and differentiation of perceived elements occur during the encoding of an episode. Emotion, through valence and arousal, can influence these processes. We tested the effect of emotion on relational binding and mnemonic discrimination, using a novel paradigm developed by Ngo, Lin, Newcombe, Olson (2019). The paradigm consists in cartoon-like animated scenes which contain pairs of objects to be memorized. Half of the associations were combined with an aversive sound while the other half were combined with a neutral sound. After each animation, participants underwent a memory test. Based on previous literature, we expected emotion to increase performance for mnemonic discrimination and to reduce performance for relational binding, as compared to performances for scenes associated with the neutral sound. Unfortunately, we did not find any significant result. We further discuss the interpretation of these results and the potential future applications of our paradigm and of research on the hippocampal processes of episodic memory.
