Abstract

The quest to understand human cognition - how we make decisions, store and retrieve memories, and execute complex movements - is akin to unraveling a multidimensional puzzle. This thesis explores these facets of cognition through an interdisciplinary lens, bridging cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and computational modeling. The core motivation for doing so is to find normative solutions to everyday problems. Consider the challenge faced by a chef participating in a cooking contest. As a chef, you’re presented with a mystery basket of ingredients. You must decide what dish to prepare that will impress the judges. Do you go for a main course, a dessert, or a fusion dish? This decision-making process requires you to weigh the potential of each ingredient against the potential reward of a winning dish. Moreover, over the years, you’ve learned countless recipes and techniques. But in the heat of the moment, which ones should you recall? Perhaps a unique spice blend or a specific cooking method will set your dish apart. You must recall the most feasible techniques and outstanding flavor profiles for this specific challenge. Finally, cooking is as much an art as it is a science. The precision with which you chop your vegetables, the finesse in your plating, or the timing of flipping a delicate piece of fish are all motor skills you’ve honed over time. If you’re up to the challenge, you must have started with basic techniques several years ago and gradually mastered more complex ones, hoping every movement now in the kitchen is deliberate and skillful. These three parts, together, connect the three central themes covered by this thesis - decisions, memory, and movement.
