Abstract

A total of 19 anurans families have been globally investigated for digenetic trematode fauna, but research in this field is limited in Indonesia. Species discrimination of anuran trematodes primarily relies on morphological examination and there is often a lack of available molecular data. This study aimed to identify the diversity of anuran trematodes in Indonesia to the lowest possible taxonomic level using morphological and molecular characterization. We collected 14 species of frogs in three different locations in West Java and nine of them were parasitized by digenean trematode belonging to five genera (i.e. Diplodicus Diesing, 1836; Ganeo Klein, 1905; Haematoloechus Looss, 1899; Mesocoelium Odhner, 1910; Pleurogenoides Travassos, 1921). Most of them were discovered in ranid and dicroglossid frogs which occurred in semi-aquatic habitat. In the phylogenetic analyses, the specimens of Ganeo, Haematoloechus, and Pleurogenoides formed single species-level lineages respectively, while specimens of Diplodiscus formed two distinct lineages. Mesocoeliumspecimens from three different locations formed three putative species-level lineages that were not spatially constrained to individual localities or host species. Both morphological and molecular examination led us to propose a new species of Haematoloechus n. sp. that parasitizes common paddy frog Fejervaryacancrivora. Our study highlighted the challenges of morphological species delimitation in anuran trematodes because some of them tend to have intraspecific variation and are diminute in their adult stage. Therefore, taxonomic research on the trematode fauna of anurans should make more use of molecular data in the future.
