Abstract

This study aimed to show that the diverse nature of the cultural identity of an in-group could be both beneficial and injurious for inter-group relations depending on the type of national identification (nationalism versus patriotism). It was assumed that for nationalists a diverse cultural identity could have injurious consequences for out-group relations in forms of higher perceived threat and higher prejudice. In a reverse effect, it was assumed that for patriots a diverse cultural identity could have beneficial consequences for inter-group relations in forms of lower perceived threat and lower prejudice. Additionally out-groups were either described as similar or dissimilar. It was supposed that dissimilar immigrants would render the consequences even more injurious for inter-group relations since they by definition represent “cultural diversity” in a higher degree than similar immigrants for nationalists in the diverse cultural identity condition. However, the similarity or dissimilarity of the immigrants was not expected to have an effect on the beneficial consequences of a diverse cultural identity for patriots. Results partially confirmed the hypothesis regarding the nationalists. The interaction between nationalism, national‟s cultural identity (as diverse or singular) and the similarity/dissimilarity of immigrants was not significant for any of the dependent variables (perceived threat and prejudice). The hypothesis concerning the patriots was not confirmed. Unexpected results were found for patriots who do not seem to differ much from nationalists when looking at perceived threat (no other interaction was found to be significant for them). The results are discussed in light of the literature presented, limitations of the study and further research suggestions are also brought up.
