Abstract

This dissertation investigates the magmatic and timescale factors controlling the link between porphyry type systems and high Sr/Y magmas. High Sr/Y signatures in porphyry-related magmatic suites are developed in long timespans (Ma) and are associated with economic mineralization. The protracted evolution favours process overprinting, making the study of the magmatic processes difficult. Chachimbiro Volcanic Complex is a compound volcano located in the Northern Volcanic Zone of the Ecuadorian Andes. The calc-alkaline magmatic suite develops in less than 0.5 Ma displaying progressively increasing Sr/Y magmas with time. The link between high Sr/Y magmas and porphyry systems and the lack of process overprinting due to the lack of widespread hydrothermal activity and the young age of the volcano make it an ideal case study for the factors leading to the development of fertile high Sr/Y magmas.
