Abstract

This article analyses contexts with animate nouns in French where grammatical gender and semantic gender (sex of the referent) do not correspond: (1) Le / La plus jeune de mes gentils enfants s'appelle Nina. the.M / the.F more young of my sweet.M.PL children. PL REFL calls Nina (2) *Le / La plus jeune de ces grandes sentinelles est un homme de 21 ans. the.M / the.F more young of these big.F.PL sentinels.F.PL is a man of 21 years We propose that the grammatical gender of enfants in (1) is not specified and that the semantic gender of sentinelles in (2) is uninterpretable, allowing the feature [+fem], for instance, not to be necessarily interpreted as female.
