This study aimed to identify the textual macrostructure as well as identify and analyze some microstructure characteristics (lexical) of the legal language found in Spain's and the United State's patent license agreements. This was achieved by conducting empirical research with a mixed-method design and applying a descriptive content analysis technique. We compiled an English-Spanish comparable bilingual corpus and a Spanish specialized monolingual corpus. Both corpora were comparable and representative, both qualitatively and quantitatively. To identify the textual microstructure, we designed an analysis grid for each sample of the comparable bilingual corpus. The results suggest that these legal agreements present, respectively, relatively constant macro and micro (lexical) textual characteristics. In addition, the legal language of these agreements is simpler and clearer than the general legal language described in the specialized literature on the subject. We conclude that the legal framework and the textual type and genre in question determine these macro and micro textual characteristics.
