Abstract

The impact of stereotype threat on cognitive performances was investigated in the elderly using a multi-threat approach. A total of 180 participants were recruited for an online survey consisting of a memory task (free and cued recalls) and a self-report threat evaluation (group-reputation and self-concept threats). The study consisted of a 2 (age group: early-aging, later-aging) by 2 (threat condition: neutral, heightened) between-participants design. Contrary to previous research, memory was not affected by the presence of a stereotype threat in neither age group. For the self-concept evaluation, the Age-by-Condition interaction was significant but opposite to the direction we had anticipated. The effects of stereotype threat manipulation and age groups on gender and education were also analyzed, with main effects found for both gender and education. The discussion explores limitations to provide explanations for the inconsistent findings of this study. Furthermore, the importance of more studies in clinical populations is presented.
