Abstract

This study sought to examine how helpers in emergency telephone services, i.e. non-professional volunteers trained at giving emotional support in listening centers, regulated their emotions in a role-playing game where they interacted with an actor in 5 realistic scenarios in our lab. We examined the links between styles of empathy as measured by the BES and helpers‘ emotion regulation strategies as measured by the GEW and their gestures during the calls, both communicative and extra-communicative ones. Expressed emotion scores suggest the protocol was realistic and succeeded in engaging participants in behaviors they would normally display at help centers. Both communicative and extra-communicative gestures occurred, the number of extra-communicative gestures greatly exceeding communicative gestures, and unique gestures exceeding repeated gestures throughout all scenarios and participants. Our sample was too small to categorize participants according to their empathy style, but non-parametric correlations between empathy and emotion regulation scores will be discussed nevertheless.
