Abstract | Much in twentieth‐century Protestant theology amounts to a massive attempt, by many different thinkers, to overcome theistic notions of God. How should this endeavor be pursued in relation with the attribute of divine immutability? In the last century, several significant theologians have preferred to speak of divine “faithfulness,” because of the fixity and rigidity which seems to be implied in the notion of immutability. Rather than simply pit “immutability” and “faithfulness” against each other, this article seeks to show that, whereas faithfulness is a much more adequate way of expressing God's constancy, immutability, too, deserves our consideration. | |
