On August 30 1965, a mass of two million cubic meters of ice and debris detached from Allalin Glacier in Switzerland, burying 88 of the technicians and workers engaged in the construction of the Mattmark dam. The fiftieth anniversary of the commemoration is coming and this article aims to contribute to the analysis of an event which is crucial in order to understand the changes that followed the disaster, both in Switzerland and in Italy, in society, media, politics, as well as in work and environmental safety. The immanent tragedy of Mattmark in these years has been removed from the collective memory and this essay intends to give back the right weight to the forgotten Marcinelle.
