Abstract

This paper presents a design method to deal with cultural issues when developing or analysing new technologies. The argument is based on the Actor-Network Theory (ANT) approach, as well as several years of research by the author on human-machine interaction in the People's Republic of China. The Domain Name System (DNS) technology, as currently used in China, is discussed as a real-world example.
