Increasing waste heat recovery by connecting existing thermal networks

Abstract

In 2013, the two largest district heating networks in Geneva/Switzerland were connected with the aim to increase the heat recovery from the municipal waste incineration plant. This increase is possible by sharing and consequently increasing base loads, while fossil-based boilers are supplying peak loads. In the future, a combination of network extension and building refurbishment would allow recovering even more waste heat.
