Abstract

Estrogen replacement therapy is gaining importance for treating the most common symptoms of estrogen decline in menopausal hysterectomized women: vasomotor symptoms, urogenital atrophy, and bone loss. However, cardiovascular safety concerns (Women's Health Initiative trial) and increased breast cancer risk (Million Women Study) have dramatically reduced oral treatment of the condition. The need of alternative, safer routes of estradiol administration is therefore recognized by the medical community. The aim of this project is to develop an effective, safe, and cosmetically acceptable gel for the systemic delivery of estradiol.
